Present & Past Canada Day
This is a community event that is hosted each year by the Centre. Canada Day in Martensville is the community’s way of celebrating our country’s birthday. This event is arranged through grants and sponsorship. July 1st, 2016 marked the 149th birthday of Canada and the 8th year that the Martensville Community Access Centre has hosted Canada Day celebrations right here in our community.
Since Canada Day 2014, a small committee of volunteers committee has joined the MIVC staff to plan this growing event. Plans are once again in the works to continue with a committee overseen by the MIVC staff and board members. The committee has already started preparations with meetings underway since September 2015. Grant applications have been submitted and sponsorship is currently being sought after.
In 2009 close to one hundred families enjoyed an afternoon of fun activities that included crafts, games, and cookies. In 2010 the celebrations were kicked up a notch, including an afternoon of family activities, a giant inflatable outdoor movie theatre that showed “How to Train Your Dragon” and of course, fireworks! Our numbers grew dramatically, with about 900 people taking in the festivities. In 2011 the festivities offered an afternoon of family activities, Canada Day Cake and Ice Cream, fireworks, and the showing of the great family film “Rio” on the giant outdoor movie theatre for close to 900 people again. In 2012 numbers went down due to inclement weather, 750 people were in attendance throughout the day’s event, but everyone still enjoyed the activities, movie and fireworks. In 2013 we saw 1,495 people throughout the day’s event. The afternoon offered family activities, Canada Day Cake and Ice Cream, and the evening’s events showcased fireworks and the outdoor showing of “The Croods.” In 2014 we saw more than 1750 people come out. We introduced our new morning senior tea, and again offered afternoon of family activities, local bakery Canada Day Cake and Ice Cream. During the evening events we had the opportunity to listen to some local talent as Jonah Chivilo performed songs and guitar for the crowd. The evening events proceeded with the Kinsmen Firework Spectacular and the showing of “The Lego Movie”. Each year the goal is to improve this event and add something new to the event. We planned 2015 year’s events to include another full day of fabulous activities for the whole family right here in Martensville. Each year we aim to include new family activities – included in this year’s event was a history display, crafts, games, a scavenger hunt, traditional games and much more. There was free cake and ice cream again, and in the evening we showcased a spectacular fireworks display and the movie “Home”. This event has something for everyone. The best part is that all of the activities are FREE for the whole family to enjoy.
